Valtenesi

Lake Garda is the northernmost place in the world with a Mediterranean climate, as evidenced by the presence of citrus fruits, capers, olive trees and vineyards. A land that has always been devoted to agriculture, the oldest plow in the world was found in Desenzano del Garda, dating back to the Bronze Age (about 4000 years ago)

The past

The towns on the western shore of the lake had spontaneously sworn loyalty to the Republic of Venice in 1428 and for this loyalty, together with the fact that it was a strategic border area between the Republic of Venice and the Duchy of Milan, they were granted a legislative and privileged tax regime which made this area, called "Magnifica Patria", almost an autonomous state. The mild climate and this particular geopolitical situation have meant that agriculture and commerce on Lake Garda have always prospered.

The Groppello

Groppello is an indigenous red grape variety, grown on the Brescia side of Lake Garda, from Salò to Desenzano. With ancient origins, it was one of the most cultivated grapes in the Garda area until the 19th century, also widespread in Lombardy, Veneto and Trentino. After phylloxera, it was largely replaced by international vines, except in Valtènesi, where around 400 hectares remain. It grows on moraine hills with pebbly and sandy soils, ideal for quality. The name "groppello" derives from the dialect "groppo" (node), referring to small and compact bunches.

Rosé wine

Groppello, due to its fineness, is ideal for rosé winemaking. Together with barbera, sangiovese and marzemino, it is used to produce Valtenèsi Chiaretto, an emerging denomination on the Italian scene. This vocation dates back to the end of the nineteenth century with Pompeo Molmenti. Valtènesi is comparable to French excellences such as Côtes du Rhône and Bandol. Valtènesi rosés are characterized by a light pink color, floral and fruity aromas. On the palate they are fresh, with good acidity and a savory and mineral finish.
